Day 1: Kigali – Akagera National Park (Drive time 2.5 hrs)
05h00: You will be picked up from your Hotel and proceed to Akagera National Park. Upon arrival at the park headquarters, you will have a briefing at the park headquarters. You will embark on a game drive viewing en route to Lake Ihema. Lining the lakes are some of the continent’s densest concentrations of water birds, while the connecting marshes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek, and the bizarre shoebill stork – the latter perhaps the most eagerly sought of all African birds.
The game drive in Akagera National Park provides you with the opportunity to see the newly re-introduced king of the jungle (Lions) as well as view gentle hills blending beautifully with lowland swamps and water bodies. You will visit the hippo pool, the Giraffe area in the south, and the lakes road up towards Birengero. Lunch at Ruzizi Tented Camp. Afternoon boat cruise you will go for a boat excursion on Lake Ihema, which will take you to the island that is inhabited by several species of birds. Day 2: Akagera National Park-Kigali – Volcanoes Park (Drive time 6 hrs)
Have breakfast at the lodge and check out. You will proceed on a day’s en-route game drive in the park with picnic lunches. This will give you an opportunity to tour the northern part of the park. The game drive in Akagera National Park provides you with the opportunity to see the newly re-introduced king of the jungle (Lions) as well as view gentle hills blending beautifully with lowland swamps and water bodies. You will visit the hippo pool, the Giraffe area in the south, and the lakes road up towards Birengero. You will then exit the park through the northern gate and have a leisurely drive back to Kigali.
Have lunch in Kigali. Afternoon at leisure drive to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze
Dinner and overnight at Sabinyo Silverback Lodge/Five Volcanoes/Bishops House/Da Vinci Lodge (Meal Plan (Lunch, Dinner, Bed and Breakfast)
Day 3: Volcanoes Gorilla Trek – Return Kigali (Drive time 2.5 hrs)
Early breakfast at the lodge then proceed to the park headquarters in time for Gorilla Trek briefing at 07h00. We will then transfer you to the start point of your guided walk which begins at 08h00. Here, your amazing adventure begins.
Mountain Gorilla in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is the home of the rare mountain gorilla and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp, and heath, but the high point will be spending an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and appearance as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and raising their young. After the memorable experience, you will return to the lodge for your lunch and check out, an optional visit to the Karisoke Research Center.
The Karisoke exhibit consists of seven sections:
- Gorillas: Overview, behavior, and life history of mountain gorillas
- Dian Fossey and the History of Karisoke
- Conservation and challenges
- Biodiversity: Other animals and plants in the forest
- Working with local communities
- The Virunga mountains
All of the exhibit’s sections include panels and posters filled with information and photos, and may also include iPads with videos, photos, and additional information. For those who want to learn more about gorillas, the gorilla section includes not only detailed information about gorillas, such as diet, behavior, and social structure but also skeletal models and audio recordings of gorilla vocalizations.
Have a leisurely driver back to Kigali arrive and drop off at your hotel or Airport.
