The Giraffe area loop in Akagera National Park is a 13 KM drive. It is an 1 hour stretch of wildlife viewing drive north turn at -3-pass Lone Tree lookout turnoff on the left, and continue on the down valley. Follow the road past -4- & -5- after which the vegetation changes from Acacia thickets in to flat, more open grasslands where you might see buffalo and giraffe and other game. Book Now

On the Giraffe area loop continues to the dam near -6- looking out for waterfowl before returning to -5-. A right then immediate left will lead to -2- to complete a figure of eight, turn left and head up the hill returning to reception. A short drive with potential to see a wide variety of bird species and plain game if you are short on time. Giraffe area loop plain and the road between -1- and -40- should be avoided in the rainy season

Akagera National Park founded in 1934, it is the country’s largest National Park. The park is home to leopard, hyena, jackal and giraffe, large herds of buffalo, impala, zebra and several antelope species. Elephants often congregate around the lakes that are inhabited by more than 800 hippos as well as crocodiles.

Akagera National Park is a beautiful place to enjoy peace in nature while viewing game animals and beautiful birds. There are probably not as many animals as some other game reserves but it’s still a very beautiful place to visit while in Rwanda

Due to its wide variety of habitats, Akagera is an important ornithological site with nearly 500 bird species. The rare and elusive shoebill shares the papyrus with other rarities such as the exquisite papyrus gonolek and countless other water birds that inhabit the wetlands in large numbers.
