For self-drive safaris, safari vehicles are available for hire, there is one 7-seater game viewing vehicle which can be hired out for full day, all which includes the vehicle + driver + guide and gas to Akagera National Park. Park guides are available for hire from the park reception and will join visitors on their self-drives. The park guides are on a first come, first serve basis and so booking them is not necessary, unless for special groups such as school trips. Start a guided game drives heading to the northern gate that takes around 6 hours but take into consideration a few sighting stops on route. Lions are predominantly in the areas of Mutumba, Mihindi, Mohana and Kilala. On a luck day, you will encounter these king of the jungle on any of the loops. Remember luck and timing play a significant role in big 5 sightings. You win some, you lose some. Mihindi loop is also known to be a track to find Elephants and Hippos but more towards the other side of the lake.
