Lake Shakani Campsite
Lake Shakani campsite nestled on the shores of Lake Shakani in the south direction of Akagera National Park approximately 4 kilometres north of the main junction towards the scenic Lake Ihema/Ruzizi Tented Camp.
The Campsite offers basic facilities to visitors who are on the overnight stay within the Park. Lake Shakani campsite has toilets as well as the washrooms. We highly recommend that the tap water is not safe to drink in Akagera National Park. We strongly recommend to the traveler to carry bottled water within themselves. You can hire the tents from the reception while the firewood will also be provided as you’re coming to camp at Lake Shakani campsite ground. The flat Savannah grassland within the Akagera National Park has enabled the Lake Shakani campsite to takes place as it offers a lake-shore camping adventure experience along the Lake.
The Lake boasts of its huge concentration of hippos and the variety of bird species including the black-headed gonoleks and on its marshy western side, there are African Jacanas, Squacco heron, common moorhen, open billed stork, long-toed lapwing, and many others. The mammal species that live in and around the lake include impalas, bush-bucks among others. The fist species that live in Lake Shakani include the catfish and tilapia.
Camping at Lake Shakani campsite is among the few ground places within the Park where you can camp for an overnight stay, and among other places where you can explore the Park in its detail including Mutamba Akagera Campsite and Muyumba Campsites
Lake Shakani is notably one of a few exceptional lakes in Akagera National Park where fishing is accepted. While on a fishing tour on the shores of the lake, you get rewarded with the amazing sights at a variety of birds, hippos, and catch of your fish. Fishing along the shores of Lake Shakani is worth taking part while you are on safari in Akagera National Park. What is amazing is that when you catch your fish there is the possibility that you can take your catch home/area of stay for a roast to allow you to get the best taste of the fish species in this lake and the most caught fish species to include catfish and tilapia. Note fishing is the major activity offered to visitors on tour in Lake Shakani, and other activities include boat the trip, bird watching, and nature walk.
Other lakes to visit in Akagera National Park includes Lake Ihema which is a perfect area for visitors to clearly see hippos, crocodiles, water birds and many elephants along its shores, Lake Gishanju, Lake Muhindi, Lake Hago, Lake Murambya, Lake Birengero and many others.
Best time to camp at Lake Shakani Campsite
Camping in Akagera National Park is all year round and visitors are welcomed within the Park. Besides that, June – September and December – February is the warmest time of year, and the park can become dry making it the best time to camp in the Park. In addition, is an excellent time for game-viewing since grasses are short, and many animals come around Lake Shakani to take drink water.
Other than Akagera National Park, Rwanda has got Nyungwe Forest National Park where visitors can have the opportunity to track Chimpanzees in Rwanda or take a canopy walk experience, the only kind of adventure in East Africa.
